Vegan and Vegetarian on a GLP-1: How to Get Enough Protein

Add to that the fact that the standard suggestion, eat more beans and lentils, tends to make the most common side effects worse, and it's easy to end up under-eating protein without realising.
Here's what the evidence supports, and what actually works day to day.
The honest version of "is plant protein worse?"
Less efficient, not worse. Two things are true at once.
Plant proteins are less digestible and lower in leucine, the amino acid that switches on muscle protein synthesis. That review puts plant sources at about 7.1% leucine against 8.8% for animal sources, and notes that when a limiting amino acid runs short, the rest get burned for energy rather than used to build muscle.
But in practice the gap is small and closable. A meta-analysis of randomised trials found that protein source did not change absolute lean mass or muscle strength, with only a modest advantage for animal protein on percent lean mass, concentrated in adults under 50. Total intake, not source, does most of the work.
That matters on a GLP-1, where 20 to 39% of the weight lost can come from lean mass and protein is the main dietary protection against that. The practical conclusion is simple: aim for the upper end of your range rather than the bottom, and the difference stops mattering.

The fibre problem nobody mentions
This is the part that catches people out.
The default plant proteins are legumes: beans, lentils, chickpeas. They're genuinely good food, but they carry a large amount of fermentable fibre alongside their protein. A GLP-1 already slows gastric emptying, so food sits in your stomach longer and ferments more. Build your entire protein intake on legumes and you reliably get bloating, gas, early fullness that stops you finishing meals, and often sulfur burps or constipation.
So the standard advice, eat more beans, quietly worsens the side effects you're already managing, and the early fullness makes it harder to reach your protein target at all.

The plant proteins that work best on a GLP-1
Ranked roughly by protein per unit of stomach space, which is the metric that matters when you can't eat much.

If you're vegetarian rather than vegan, dairy and eggs make this much easier: Greek yogurt (17 g per 170 g pot), cottage cheese (11 g per 100 g), two eggs (12 g), whey protein (24 g per scoop). Whey in particular is high in leucine and easy to get down on a bad day. There's no reason to avoid these if they're already part of your diet.
Five things that actually work
- Aim high, not low. Take the upper part of your calculated range. It costs you nothing and covers the digestibility gap.
- Anchor every meal on something concentrated. Tofu, tempeh, seitan, or a shake. Vegetables and grains fill the plate around it, not instead of it.
- Use a protein shake without guilt. On a suppressed appetite, liquid protein is often the only realistic way to reach your number. Soy and pea isolates are complete enough to do the job.
- Blend your sources across the day. Cereals and legumes complement each other's limiting amino acids, and the Berrazaga review lists blending as one of the main strategies for improving plant protein quality. You don't need to combine them in the same meal.
- Add legumes back gradually. If beans currently wreck you, that's a tolerance issue, not a permanent verdict. Increase slowly and with plenty of fluid.
Two things worth knowing
Creatine is more useful for you than for most people. Dietary creatine comes almost entirely from meat and fish, so vegetarians and vegans start with lower muscle creatine stores and tend to respond more to supplementation. Watch the nutrients that were already tight. B12, iron, zinc, and omega-3 need attention on any plant-based diet, and eating substantially less food shrinks your margin on all of them. If you were relying on volume of food to cover these, that no longer holds. This is a good reason to check in with a dietitian or your prescriber rather than guess.

One limitation worth stating plainly: there are no studies testing plant-based diets specifically in people taking GLP-1 medications. Everything above is drawn from solid research on plant protein and muscle in the general population, applied to the GLP-1 situation. That's reasonable inference, not direct evidence.
